Excavators for Sale in Melbourne

Live excavator stock across Victoria, where the dealers are, and what Melbourne's soil and civil workload does to a used machine.

Melbourne has the largest civil construction pipeline in the country and an excavator market shaped by it. Plenty of stock, high turnover, and a lot of machines coming out of infrastructure work rather than quarrying.

Listings below cover all of Victoria. Our data records the dealer's state and suburb, not a metro boundary — so check the suburb before planning a trip. Melbourne to Mildura is a long day.

Where the dealers are

  • The south-east — Dandenong, Hallam, Carrum Downs. The densest concentration of earthmoving dealers in Victoria.
  • The west along the Princes and Western freeways — Laverton, Truganina, Derrimut. Growth-corridor civil work and a lot of larger machines.
  • The north — Campbellfield, Somerton, Epping, serving the northern growth corridor.
  • Geelong and the Surf Coast, a real secondary market with its own dealers.
  • Regional hubs: Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and the Latrobe Valley, where agricultural and mining-adjacent machines turn up.

What Melbourne work does to a machine

Civil, not quarry

Ex-infrastructure machines have typically done trenching, bulk earthworks and roadworks. That means high hydraulic duty cycles, plenty of travel on a float, and — because these are usually contract jobs with liquidated damages attached — maintenance that was actually done on schedule. Fleet machines off a major project often present better than an owner-operator machine of the same age.

Undercarriage is the number

On any tracked machine the undercarriage is commonly the single largest lifetime maintenance cost, and a full replacement on a 20-tonne excavator runs into tens of thousands. Melbourne's basalt and rock in the west is abrasive; the alluvial soils in the south-east are kinder. Two machines with identical hours can be tens of thousands apart in remaining undercarriage life depending purely on where they worked. Ask, and then look for yourself.

Attachments carry real value

A machine with quick hitch, buckets, a tilt hitch and a hammer already matched to it saves a great deal of money and hassle. Price the attachments separately in your head, because a bare machine at a lower number is often the more expensive purchase.

Ex-hire fleet machines

Melbourne has a big hire fleet, and ex-hire machines reach the market in volume. They have usually been serviced religiously and treated indifferently by operators who did not own them. Well-documented servicing, cosmetically rough, and priced accordingly — often good value if you inspect properly.

Common questions

Where do I find excavator dealers in Melbourne?

The heaviest concentration is in the south-east around Dandenong, Hallam and Carrum Downs, with further clusters in the west along the Princes and Western freeways at Laverton, Truganina and Derrimut, and in the north at Campbellfield and Somerton. Geelong is a genuine secondary market.

Are ex-hire excavators a good buy?

Often yes, with inspection. Hire fleets service on strict schedules and keep records, so mechanical history is usually excellent. The trade-off is cosmetic condition and operator wear, since nobody driving them owned them. They are priced to reflect that, which is where the value is.

Why does it matter where an excavator has worked?

Undercarriage wear is driven by ground conditions. Abrasive rock in Melbourne's west consumes chains, rollers and sprockets far faster than the alluvial soils in the south-east. Two machines with identical hours can differ by tens of thousands of dollars in remaining undercarriage life.
