Top 20 Trucks Under $80k

Live pick of trucks currently advertised under $80,000, plus what that budget realistically buys in each segment and where the money goes after purchase.

The list below is generated from live dealer listings when you load this page. We do not publish a fixed list of trucks with prices attached — those are wrong within a fortnight, and a stale price presented as current is the practice the ACCC fined Trivago $44.7 million over.

What $80,000 actually buys

This is one of the most useful budgets in the Australian truck market, because it straddles a real dividing line. Below it you are buying either a small new truck or a well-used large one. It does not buy a low-kilometre heavy-duty prime mover, and any listing suggesting otherwise deserves a very careful look.

Light duty, 4.5 to 8 tonne

The strongest position at this budget. Eighty thousand puts you into a late-model, moderate-kilometre light truck from a mainstream manufacturer, sometimes with warranty remaining. This is where the money goes furthest because the segment sells in volume — 13,712 light-duty trucks were sold new in Australia in 2025, and they reach the used market steadily.

Medium duty, 10 to 16 tonne

Achievable, older. Expect an eight to twelve year old truck with real kilometres. Medium duty is the smallest new segment, so used choice is thinner and you may wait for the right one.

Heavy duty and prime movers

This budget buys a high-kilometre prime mover near the end of its first working life. Some are honest, sound trucks with a rebuild behind them. Others are being sold precisely because the next major expense is due. The difference is documentation, and there is no substitute for it.

Tippers, tautliners and specialist bodies

The body is often worth more than the cab at this level. A tidy tipper body on a tired chassis can be a good buy or a trap depending on which half fails first.

The costs that follow the purchase price

A truck at the top of your budget with nothing left for what it needs is worse than a cheaper truck with a reserve behind it. Before committing the full $80,000, price these:

  • Tyres. A full set on a heavy vehicle runs into thousands, and a truck presented for sale on marginal tyres is telling you something about how it was run.
  • Roadworthy or safety inspection, plus whatever it fails on.
  • Brakes and suspension — expensive, and the components most often deferred by a seller.
  • The first service in your name, done properly, so you know your own baseline.
  • Registration and CTP, which vary substantially by state and by vehicle mass.
A common and expensive mistake is financing the full purchase price and paying for tyres and a roadworthy out of cash flow in the same month the truck starts earning. Build those into the amount you finance, not around it.

Common questions

What sort of truck can I buy for $80,000 in Australia?

Most commonly a late-model light-duty truck in the 4.5 to 8 tonne range with moderate kilometres, or an older medium-duty rigid. It does not buy a low-kilometre heavy-duty prime mover — at this budget a prime mover will be high-kilometre and near the end of its first working life.

Why does this page not list prices directly?

Because they change. Every price shown comes from the dealer's own current listing and carries the date it was observed. Publishing a fixed list of trucks and prices would mean showing figures that are out of date within weeks, which is misleading rather than helpful.

Should I spend my whole budget on the truck?

Generally no. Tyres, a roadworthy inspection, deferred brake and suspension work and a first service in your own name can add thousands immediately after purchase. Buying slightly below your ceiling and keeping a reserve usually produces a better outcome than buying the most truck the number allows.
